20th Century. The underside stamped twice, Thomas Langan Maker, Roslyn Harbor. Uncle Sam, dressed in his typical, iconic American red and white striped pants, shirt, and top hat with formal blue jacket, his arms hinged at the shoulder, one raised up, the other pointed down terminating in painted stars and stripes paddles, with glass-inset eyes, and a tin bowtie and hat rim painted red, on a stepped circular base. Height 29 in. Width 12.5 in. Cf. Thomas Lagan was born in 1942. He is self-taught artist, who has become renowned for his folk-art carvings. He began carving full time while in his mid-thirties. Langan’s first carvings, decoys and shore birds were influenced by the functional design of early American decoys. His subjects grew to include domestic, farm and forest animals, trade signs, whirligigs, fish, and weathervanes. His work has been placed in many private and public collections. The artist’s Whistling Swan can be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Folk Art in New York City.
