Description:

Untitled, Abstract, signed lower right. Oil on Canvas. 28 by 34.5 in., overall, in a gilt wood frame 32.5 by 39 in. Cf. Fernando de Szyzlo studied in Lima at the School of Plastic Arts of the …. Catholic University of Peru. At the age of 24 he traveled in Europe where he studied the work of many masters, particularly, the works of Rembrandt, Tintoretto, and Titian. In Paris he met Andre Breton and other intellectuals, writers and artists who frequented Café Flore. It was there that he familiarized and absorbed the various influences of abstraction, surrealism, and cubism. Upon the artist's return to Peru he became a major force for artistic renewal, he was instrumental in breaking new ground by expressing Latin subject matter in a non-representational style. He was a proponent of linking elements of indigenous Latin cultures with a modernist artistic language. Lyricism of color and movement enriched by the effects of light and shadow are hallmarks of Fernando de Szyzlo work. His work is represented in many public and private collections in Latin America, the United States and Europe.
