Rare and Important Painting circa 1510-15 from the hand of a pupil of Leonardo as researched by Prof.Carlo Pedretti from The Armand Hammer Center for Leonardo Studies, University of California, Los Angeles for the Important Exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci--Scientist, Inventor, Artist” at the Swiss National Museum, Zurich, Switzerland, September, 2000 to February 2001. Provenance: The Estate of Arthur Bradley Campbell, Palm Beach; Heirs of the Estate of A.B. Campbell.

 

The painting is oil or tempera on paper applied to a wood panel. Measures-9” x 6”. On the back of the panel are fragmentary wax seals and a strip of paper with an 18th century ink inscription “Leonardo davinci”. The painting is catalogued and illustrated on page 214 of the exhibition book.

 

Quoting Prof. Pedretti, “Because of the great dexterity involved, this drawing technique applied to the painting betrays the hand of a master, or at least of exceptionally gifted pupil such as Melzi or Cesare del Sesto.”
